Can a private christian business discriminate based on religious affiliation?

If a church or religious organization needed someone to say, clean the building or answer phones as opposed to being a pastor, are they allowed to discriminate based on religious affiliation where the religious affiliation will not affect ones ability to perform the job requirements?
