The American brand of slavery during and before the 1860's was a paradox in itself. The Slave owners believed that by incarcerating the slaves they were actually freeing them and teaching them the way to depart from their savage ways of life. This belief was total hypocrisy, and was only used by bigots to justify the system of slavery. When the slaves were emancipated january first of 1863 their abhor to the institution of slavery became evident when they took up arms and fought with the North to defeat the South in the Civil War.
