What happens to the gr and deciduous trees in New Zealand's north island during winter?

Does the gr die off, and do the trees lose their leaves the same as they do in North America during the winter? I have never been in the Southern Hemisphere during their (your) winter and have always wondered if it's green there, all year round. I would also like to know the same for Australia/Tasmania. Thank you!
